My work in Slab City marks a major shift in my career as a photographer.

I had been studying the work of many photographers and noticed the difference between my pictures and theirs was a lack of intimacy due to my fear of really getting close and building trust. I watched a documentary on Slab City and booked a flight to Los Angeles the next day. I decided I was going to experiment going to a strange place alone, armed with nothing other than a camera and some film. I wanted to meet new people, connect on an emotional level and take photos that felt intimate. I have since been a couple of times, each time bringing back prints to personally deliver them to the subject before shooting more.
